We recently received a call from a Highlands woman (who asked not to be named), who wanted to extend her gratitude to an unknown person.
The woman, (we will call her Beryl for the purpose of this story) wanted to say thank you to someone – she didn’t know who it was, but she was incredibly grateful for a simple gesture they made.
You see Beryl is required to wear a hat at all times for medical reasons.
However, windy conditions one day last week caused her hat to keep blowing off her head.
After several attempts at replacing her windswept hat on her head she gave up and put it in the basket she was carrying.
Unfortunately the basket was not enough to contain her much-needed head covering.
It was eventually blown out of the basket.
It was only when she went to replace it on her head once more that she realised it was gone.
It was a situation that left Beryl quite concerned.
You see Beryl is a pensioner and buying a new hat is not in her budget, but not wearing her hat is of equal concern.
She sat down for a bit to ponder the situation and calm her nerves.
Once she had come to terms with the loss of her head wear she decided to return to her car and go home.
To her great relief the walk back to her car proved fruitful as she noticed her missing hat resting on a bench seat.
It was a sight for sore eyes as far as Beryl was concerned.
She said she was immediately grateful for the kind person who had taken the time to pick up the wayward hat and place it in a location, out of the wind, in the hope that the rightful owner would find it.
“I just wanted to share my story,” she said.
What may have seemed like a simple gesture by one person in the street has provided great relief for another.
Perhaps Beryl’s story will be food for thought for all as they go about their day to day activities.
The simple things in life really do matter.
Maybe it is just a smile, assistance offered to someone – those little gesture truly can make a difference in the life of another.
It is gestures such as this that make a town a community.
