A 10-year wait for the region’s first transitional home is almost over.
Challenge House, a multi-million dollar initiative from Challenge Southern Highlands to provide housing for Highlanders with disabilities, is near completion.
In the final weeks before construction is over, finishing touches will be added to each of the 10 bedrooms and common spaces. This allows residents to live independently of their parents and work towards self-sufficiency.
Challenge Southern Highlands general manager Tony McElhinney said the home, built to look like a typical, residential house, already had inquiries from eight families.
The project was supported by a $400,000 council grant and land donation, and a $900,000 state government Restart NSW grant.
A caretaker will be employed for the Mittagong home, but residents are responsible for normal household duties. Those interested in living at Challenge House, or to offer support for the project, can contact Mr McElhinney on 0416 259 208.
