His colleagues gathered on July 17 to celebrate his time with the NSW Police Force, the last 31 of which have been based out of the Southern Highlands.
Hume Local Area Command Acting Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis congratulated Sergeant Loomes on his achievement.
“You’ve always been a friendly face during my time here, and your knowledge and experience has been much appreciated,” he said.
Sergeant Loomes graduated from the police academy in 1978 and joined the prosecution branch in 1980. He served in the Liverpool division before applying for a country position.
“It’s been the perfect place to work – close to the city, close to the coast,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
When Sergeant Loomes first took up the position in the country circuit, there were five courts in the district.
He has represented cases at Camden, Picton, Bowral, Moss Vale and Goulburn courts during his time in the force, and said he enjoyed trying to find out the truth.
On achieving 39 years service, Rod said he was fortunate to have had such a great career.
“I was going to go for 40, but then I thought, it’s just a number,” he laughed.
Sergeant Loomes said he looked forward to retirement, which in the short term would include a trip away with his wife Jan.
