National Day of Action vigil

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION: RARsh committee member Marree Byrne will take part in the vigil on July 19.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION: RARsh committee member Marree Byrne will take part in the vigil on July 19.

On 19 July, it will be four years since then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced that asylum seekers would be detained in the Manus Island, never to settle in Australia.

The Manus Island and Nauru centres have been condemned by the UNHCR, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International and many other humanitarian and human rights organisations.

Rural Australians for Refugees Southern Highlands (RARsh) and Amnesty will join together in a vigil on July 19 to stand with these asylum seekers and the immediate closure of these detention centres.

The Australian Refugee Action Network (ARAN), a newly-formed national network of scores of refugee activist groups, announced July 19 as National Day of Action, to call for the immediate closure of these camps and for the asylum seekers detained therein to be brought to Australia.

The vigil will be held in Corbett Plaza from 5pm on Wednesday, July 19.

Attendees have been asked to bring along their own candles (preferably LED) to stand in solidarity with the Asylum Seekers detained for four long years on Manus Island and Nauru.

Numbers of those attending the vigil are growing daily, and all Highlanders have been encouraged to attend.
