In May last year Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced he would not be taking the advice of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) and raising fares.
Instead, fares were frozen until July 3, 2017 – which is Monday.
From this week, Opal card users will be paying 2.4 per cent more per trip.
That equates to an extra 40 cents a day for a Wollongong resident commuting to Sydney.
The rise in fares will also see the daily and weekly travel caps increase slightly.
The rise is in line with the Consumer Price Index and lower than the 4.2 per cent maximum increase suggested by IPART.
The increase does not affect Gold Opal card users, who will continue to pay no more than $2.50 a day.
