A 55-year-old man has been charged over the alleged assault of a child in a West Wollongong park.

Police say the man whipped the eight-year-old boy with a metal dog lead on May 15 after the child collided with the man’s dog while riding a bicycle in Roy Johansen Park.
The man then allegedly ran from the scene.
The child suffered an injury to his back and received medical treatment.
Officers from Wollongong Local Area Command were alerted to the incident and commenced investigations.
Following inquiries, the 55-year-old man was arrested on Friday and was taken to Wollongong Police Station.
He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, July 18.
