Australia’s first ever pie-themed month has kicked off in the Highlands, and residents are ready to tuck in to the region’s famous winter warmers.
Bakers have been busy perfecting their best pie recipes for the inaugural Southern Highlands Best Pie competition.
Although this is not a public event during the judging days, it is the event that will decide the best pies in the Southern Highlands.
The winning pies will be on display and available for everyone to taste at the Southern Highlands Pie Time Festival over the weekend of June 24-25.
The competition, which will be judged on Thursday and Friday was open to any baker, professional or not, in the Southern Highlands.
Judges will be on the hunt for the best red meat, white meat, vegetarian, seafood, sweet, apprentice and community pies, with dozens of entries from across the region vying for the top honor.
But if baking isn’t for you, there will plenty of chances to taste the great Aussie pies.
The Pie Time festival will be held at Corbett Gardens and will be the hub of all things pie.
The festival will feature pie tasting, local food, wine, beer and cider stands, cooking demonstrations, pie eating competitions plus a a pie throwing competition.
Destination Southern Highlands manager of tourism and events Steve Rosa said the Southern Highlands was the number one place to experience, enjoy and worship the great Australian past time of eating a meat pie.
“We all know Australians just love a local pie,” he said.
"The Southern Highlands has a large saturation of quality pie producers with everything from your top-notch gourmet pies, to family winter warmers and deliciously sweet dessert pies.”
Mr Rosa said the aim of the festival was to showcase the shire’s pies, local and fresh ingredients and dedicated bakers.
“Visitors can tour and sample locally made pies on our Pie Trail, and at Dine with a Pie visitors can savour the region’s gourmet signature pies at hotels, cafes and restaurants available only for the month of June,” Mr Rosa said.
