The heavy vehicle, with Victorian registration, was travelling on the Hume Highway at Pheasants Nest on June 15 when police on radar duties detected it travelling at an alleged speed of 144km/h.
It was stopped in a 110km/h zone, however the truck is restricted to a maximum speed of 100km/h.
State Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said the speed of the truck was among the fastest on record.
“To have such a heavy vehicle, laden with further heavy machinery, hurtling down the highway at that speed is a disaster waiting to happen,” he said.
“Officers will always be on the lookout for irresponsible driving behaviour which puts innocent road users at risk.”
Police spoke to the driver and a mechanical and electronic examination of the truck was conducted. The truck was found to have oil leaks and breach speed limit restrictions.
A major grounded defect notice was issued to the driver, who was fined $1364 and five demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h in a Class C heavy vehicle. The driver was also fined $2238 for driving a vehicle not speed limiter compliant.
