The Illawarra branch of the Animal Welfare League NSW has worked with Wollongong and Shellharbour councils to advocate for discounts on desexing.
This year cat owners receiving welfare benefits or who hold a Health Care Card will be able to desex their furry friend for $60 (a procedure that could cost up to $200).
AWL Illawarra secretary Carolyn White said having your cat desexed helps the environment as well as making registations with council cheaper.
“You don’t have unwated litters, you don’t have stray cats in peoples yards, you don’t have then harming the environment and it’s part of being a responsible pet owner,” Ms White said.
“There are already plenty of animals, cats in particular, in shelters.”
