A car had driven off the road on Bowral Road Mittagong.
The only thing that stopped the car falling down a steep slope and into the Claytons backyard was a tree.
An incident like this was the very reason Michelle has been in contact with both council and the RMS for over a year to have a guard rail installed on that stretch of road.
The Claytons house on Old Bowral Road backs onto Bowral Road.
“Both RMS and council delegates have been out and said it should definitely have a guard rail because of the steep drop,” Michelle said.
She said of all the properties that backed onto Bowral Road, theirs had the steepest drop and their house was closest to the road.
“Since the end of 2015 I’ve [written] constant letters and emails. It could be our house [next time], it could be a truck just comes straight down through the house.”
Michelle said something needed to be done before a serious injury or death occurred. Cars attempting to pull over for emergency vehicles was another issue she said could lead to an accident.
A council spokesman said the road was managed by the RMS and the site of the accident had been listed on an upcoming list of site inspections for council’s traffic committee.
Traffic committee chairman councillor Ian Scandrett said he expected council staff would inspect the site prior the next committee meeting on July 13.
“I appreciate Ms Clayton brought this to our attention and look forward to the assessment of the situation.”
Representatives from council, the RMS, NSW Police and local MPs will be present at the meeting.
The Committee comprises of two councillors reps, an RMS rep, a rep from NSW Police and the Local MP (or their nominated representative).
An RMS spokesperson confirmed this issue would be on the July 13 agenda.
“The safety of the community is Roads and Maritime’s number one priority and residents will be kept informed about any proposal to install a guardrail at this location.”
