The 18-carat gold cup, valued at $200,000, will arrive in town on July 20, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) announced on Tuesday
Selected for its passion for racing and community spirit, Nowra will join Bermagui and 29 other cities and towns across Australia and New Zealand in the 15th annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
Shoalhaven City Turf Club chief Lynn Locke said they were thrilled to be part of the tour.
“We’re extremely excited to have the Emirates Melbourne Cup visit Nowra this year to celebrate our special link to ‘the race that stops a nation’,” she said.
“The winner of the first and second Emirates Melbourne Cups, Archer, was trained in Shoalhaven.
“We are raising funds in conjunction with the Shoalhaven City Council to erect an Archer Memorial in the city centre and feel the tour will be a great opportunity to build awareness of our history and our special link with the Melbourne Cup.”
The tour will begin on July 1 in the NSW town of West Wyalong, where the gold used by ABC Bullion to make the trophy is mined, before returning to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.
Since its inaugural year, the Tour has travelled more than 494,000 kilometres and visited more than 377 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations, providing communities with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup first-hand.
Community members are encouraged to upload photos with the Cup to Facebook, using the hashtags #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup, for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington for the running of the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
