Explore a social art exhibition about human dignity, identity and strength.
Stories About Hope is an exhibition sponsored by Rural Australians for Refugees Southern Highlands and Amnesty International, and explores the qualities of people from refugee backgrounds through photography and short films.
RARsh member Francine Bartlett said the exhibition’s stories celebrated the courage and resilience of people who had undertaken diverse journeys to Australia throughout history.
“From Holocaust survivors to our most recent young arrivals, the stories prove that your past does not define you, but can give you more strength to move forward with confidence,” she said.
The use of visual art encourages viewers to explore what it means to be of a refugee background.
“The stories move far beyond the false narrative of people seeking asylum being a burden on our society,” Francine said.
“The exhibition will celebrate the unique stories and contributions of people who have sought safety in Australia, and it shines an important light on the voices, perspectives and experiences erased from public conversation.”
The works were produced by Renee Dixson and curated by Amber Hearn. Opening night will feature short documentary screenings and an artist talk. Stories About Hope also has an associated book by Elias Kelleher, which will be available for purchase at the exhibition.
The exhibition will be displayed at The Old Town Hall, Bendooley Street, Bowral, and will open at 6.00pm on May 26. It will also be open for viewing from 10.00am to 4.00pm on May 27 and 28.
Highlanders can also explore the ideas of home, displacement and belonging in exile at an associated workshop.
The Let’s Talk About Home workshop will ask questions around what and where is home, and if one can be found once lost.
Attendance to the workshop is by gold coin donation, and it will be held May 28 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
