The NSW Police force is supporting NSW Crime Stoppers Day, an annual celebration to mark the achievements of the community-based initiative.
Crime Stoppers, founded in 1989, encourages all people to report any criminal or suspicious behaviour they have seen in their community.
In the past five years, NSW Crime Stoppers has received more than 390,000 contacts from the community. These resulted in the arrest of 5574 people, the seizure of drugs valued at more than $117 million and the recovery of property valued at more than $11 million.
NSW Police Force operational communications and information commander Assistant Commissioner Peter Barrie said police appreciated the support of Crime Stoppers.
“The information Crime Stoppers gathers from active community engagement is essential in assisting our local officers with crime-solving and crime prevention,” Assistant Commissioner Barrie said.
He said Crime Stoppers relied on information from members of the public on any criminal or suspicious activity including unsolved crimes and people wanted by the police.
“At the end of the day it’s a joint effort between Crime Stoppers, police, the media and the public to ensure a safer community.”
He said contacting Crime Stoppers only took a few minutes and could be key to making NSW a safer place.
Crime Stoppers helps solve a crime every 11 hours in NSW and in the past 12 months there has been more than 1000 arrests as a result of tip offs.
Crime Stoppers CEO Peter Price AM said Crime Stoppers allowed vital information to be passed on in confidence or anonymously.
“On Crime Stoppers Day, we encourage people to save the number into their mobile phones, 1800 333000, to “like” NSW Crime Stoppers on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or to visit our NSW Crime Stoppers website to learn more about what we do, including reporting information anonymously on-line.”
