The bold red tribute used more than 2500 handmade poppies to honour Australia’s service men, women and animals.
The majority of the crocheted and hand-sewn poppies were sent from across Australia and overseas.
Roslyn Power of Colo Vale coordinated the ten-month project, supported by her daughter Sheree Milne and Diana Gillard.
Sheree, who is a member of an online crochet group, put the word out to other members.
The response was incredible.
“I’d say between 70 and 80 per cent of the poppies we got were from all over Australia and overseas,” Roslyn said.
More than a century after hundreds of thousands of soldiers left Australian shores to fight overseas, Roslyn said it was heartwarming to see thousands of carefully handmade poppies sent back to Australia.
“They came from America, England and all across Australia – we had poppies sent from all but one state.”
Residents of a Queensland nursing home contributed more than 500 poppies.
The thought that went into the display made the tribute even more touching.
“The red poppies obviously symbolise the soldiers, but we included white flowers to represent the nurses and purple to show the animals who served and died,” Roslyn said.
