But a century-old country cottage in Wingello brought one Highlands family back together.
A Wingello pioneering family – the Lynam family – once owned the quaint home, which now operates as a quiet country retreat.
Once owned by Beaumont and Beatrice Lynam, the cottage was home to their children Ron, Fred, Vera, Val, Beryl, Gordon, Janice and Colleen for countless years before it was eventually sold.
Easter 2017 presented the family with an opportunity for a catch up, and what better place to congregate than in their old home.
The family hired the accommodation and surviving siblings Vera, Beryl, Gordon, Janice and Colleen thoroughly enjoyed the chance to return to their old bedrooms and reminisce on tales of their childhood.
It was a special trip for Vera in particular, who was born in the house more than 90 years ago.
Once word spread through the family of the 2017 Easter long weekend catch-up, more relatives trekked to the Highlands for a trip down memory lane.
By Easter Sunday, more than 20 relatives of the Lynam family had popped in to the one-time Lynam family home, known as ‘Verona’.
A proud family history
Beaumont Lynam served in the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment in the 34th Reinforcement and later, was one of four Lynam family members to serve in World War II.
Private Edmund Beaumont Lynam, a 21-year-old labourer from Wingello, New South Wales enlisted on June 16, 1917 – almost a century ago.
He was born in Wyalong and enlisted in Goulburn.
At the conclusion of the war he returned to Australia on June 28, 1919.
Valerie Lynam of Wingello, born September 1, 1926, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on November 30, 1944 as an aircraft woman.
Vera Audrey Lynam, born August 23, 1924 in Wingello, was also a member of the Royal Australian Air Force.
She enlisted on January 6, 1944.
A new ‘home’ life
The home, which has since been extended, is now a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house known as ‘Gables Cottage’ set on two acres of beautiful country land on Bumballa Road in Wingello.
