The Spuddies failed to find the try line in the round two Cup competition match with an 18-0 loss.
Spuddies Cup captain/coach Aaron Ditton attributed the loss to too much dropped ball and missed chances.
“We dropped the ball a bit and we kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” he said.
“We had a few good chances but we dropped a few close to the line. If we had of gotten those tries we could have worked up a bit of momentum for scoring but unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
Depsite the score, Ditton said it was a close match.
“It was pretty tight, it was 0-0 until just before the second half,” he said.
Ditton said the team’s fitness levels needed to improve after wet weather hampered the team’s pre-season training.
“Our number one goal this week for both grades will be fitness and focusing on completing sets,” he said.
“If we get to the fitness levels I know we are capable of we will be able to give it a red hot go in both the Cup and Shield.”
The second Spuddies team fell to Oran Park in the Southern Highlands Shield match 22-10.
Captain Aaron De Jager said the Spuddies “were a bit rusty.”
“It was our first game together really and we hadn’t had much prior training because of the wet weather,” he said.
De Jager said Oran Park came out with strong energy in the first half.
“They were fairly enthusiastic and scored a couple of tries straight up,” he said.
Hayden Watts scored the first try for the Spuddies before the break and at halftime the Spuddies trailed 10-4.
In the second half Damien Barton scored again for the Spuddies but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
De Jager said his team needed to work on their defence before their next match.
“A lot of the blokes haven’t played together before so we need to work on our combinations and do a lot more with the ball,” he said.
The Robertson Cup team will have the bye in round three, while the Shield team will play Bargo Bunnies on April 30.
De Jager said the Shield team were confident heading into the match.
“It’s always tough against Bargo and this weekend won’t be any different,” he said.
