The building has been standing for 125 years, and the owners are celebrating the special milestone.
Warwick and Barbara Wainberg purchased the property in 2009 and spent seven years restoring it. “Developers had an eye on it to be demolished, and we don’t like to see beautiful, old heritage buildings be destroyed,” Mr Wainberg said. “We wanted to bring it back to its original beauty for all to enjoy.”
It was a bank and manager’s residence until falling into disrepair in the late 1970s. The Wainbergs enlisted the help of the Berrima District Historical and Family History Society to collect old photographs of the district, which have been hung in the rooms and halls of the hotel.
A birthday package to mark the occasion includes two nights’ accommodation, cooked country breakfasts and a three-course dinner for two for one evening, including a bottle of wine.
The package is available from $680 per couple on weekdays (or $170 per person per day, representing a 15 per cent discount,) and from $785.50 on weekends (12 per cent discount). The package is available for stays until June 30, 2017.
The hotel has five Victorian-era styled suites, a studio and a self-contained cottage and is at 83 Main Street, Mittagong. Details: 4872 4496.
