St. Stephen’s Anglican Church ladies decided to hand-knit and crochet about 4000 poppies for the remembrance masterpiece.
Organiser Nan Saint-John said the ladies met once a month to knit and talk, and decided to design the giant cross for Anzac Day.
“We handed out the wool and poppy patterns, because we wanted to do something different,” she said.
“Fast knitters could create a poppy in about 30 minutes, but the average time was 45 minutes per flower.”
This equates to about 3000 hours of knitting to complete the cross.
A group of 20 ladies in Wollongong also helped complete the project.
The flowers were attached to the wire cross and then lifted onto the church window by patrons.
The poppies all have their own embellishments, so it pays to go up and have a closer look as you enjoy free tea, coffee and Anzac biscuits at the church after Anzac Day services.
