But almost as many homes now own reptiles as small animals – even across the Highlands.

Figures from Animal Medicines Australia show Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world.

Across the country, there’s an estimated 24 million domestic animals: almost as many pets as people.

The average number of small animals per household is 1.9, and the number for reptiles is 1.7.

We Know Pets owner and director Jeremy Maitland said the figures were also reflective of trends in the Southern Highlands.

“We have seen an increase in reptiles becoming a popular household pet,” he said.

“They make excellent pets as they have different requirements compared to more traditional pets and people find that they are better suited to their modern lifestyle.”

According to the AMA 2016 Pet Ownership in Australia Report, the dog is still the most popular household pet, with almost two in five households with at least one canine companion.

More than half of all dogs owned in Australia are pure breeds, 41 per cent are mixed breeds and seven per cent are designer breeds.

The trusty tabby came in at second place, with almost three in 10 households owning a cat.

At least one in 10 households keep fish, with an average of eight fish per household.

Birds are owned by about the same number of households, with an average of about 4 birds per home.

Companionship was the top reason for the increase of reptilian pets.

People also mentioned relaxation, entering competitions as a hobby and that reptiles were lower maintenance pets.

Mr Maitland said he and his team at the Bowral store knew lifestyle was a key consideration for pet owners looking to choose a suitable animal companion.

“We recognise the fundamental match between the owner’s lifestyle and the type of pet desired,” he said.

“If you’re an outdoor type who loves to walk or run, then a dog may be for you. If you prefer pets that do not require as much attention, then perhaps fish or reptiles would be more appropriate.”
