Seven-year-old Carys is thousands of dollars closer to receiving an operation which could save her life.
This is thanks to the “overwhelming” support the Proud family has received during their ‘Walk for Carys’ campaign.
The Bowral family decided to walk on a treadmill for 26 hours to raise money for the little girl.
Tracy Proud said so many people contacted her once they heard about the campaign that it had stretched beyond family involvement.
“Whenever we told friend’s about Carys, everyone was asking what they could do beyond donating,” she said.
“People wanted to get involved because they realise it could happen to anyone.”
Carys was diagnosed with a DIPG Tumor, which is a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer which is inoperable.
She needs to be flown to London to access a possibly life-saving trial treatment.
“It takes 26 hours to fly to London, which is why we decided to walk for 26 hours,” Ms Proud said.
“We just wanted to do something to bring this disease attention and let Carys’ mum Rachel [who is friends with the family] know that people were supporting them, loved them, and hoped her daughter had a chance at survival and treatment.”
Carys’ family needs $350,000 to fund the trip to London, where she has been accepted into a new trial program to try and defeat the disease.
At the time of writing (March 24, 5.00pm), $258,998 had been raised through the ‘Caring for Carys’ GoFundMe page.
