The Reaching 4 Korina charity golf day was held at the Highlands Golf Club on March 5.
Despite the initial rainy weather, a number of Highlanders teed off to raise money for Sepsis awareness and quadruple amputees like Korina Valentine.
The golf day was followed by dinner which helped the charity meet its major goal of being able to provide major equipment such as wheelchairs, modified vehicles and prosthetics.
Reaching 4 Korina was set up after Yerrinbool woman Korina Valentine became seriously ill with sepsis.
In April 2015, one week before her 28th birthday, Korina became seriously ill with symptoms doctors thought to be influenza but was in fact a life threatening bacterial infection.
Korina’s condition rapidly deteriorated and doctors held grave fears for her survival and placed her on life support as her vital organs began to shut down.
Unfortunately the severity of her condition resulted in quadruple amputations, but against all odds she survived.
Korina’s husband Daniel Valentine said that first charity event for 2017 was a huge success.
“It started off a bit wet but the sun came out and we had a really successful day,” he said.
“We had all of our numbers which was a bit of a suprise because of the wet weather but it was a great day for Reaching 4 Korina and we are really happy with the response.”
At the charity dinner Daniel said the event had raised an estimated total of about $15,000.
“We didn’t start with a target amount so we are very grateful for all the money that has been raised,” he said.
“It’s a good footprint and the community has been awesome. They keep showing up for Korina.”
Despite the challenges she's faced, Korina is looking forward to a future with more independence.
Her husband said that she should have prosthetics for all four of her limbs by the end of this year.
“We are looking forward to it and it will be great for her. It will give her a bit more independence which she’s been missing.”
The Highlands community will again have the opportunity to support Korina at a trivia night in June.
Government funding does not cover all the costs associated with the prosthetics so the charity needs as much help as possible to ensure Korina enjoys a basic quality of life. For more information about the charity or to donate, visit www.reaching4korina.com.au.
