Allen Oakes, 24, of Dapto, appeared before Magistrate Gabriel Fleming in Nowra Local Court on Monday, pleading guilty to injuring a domestic animal and failing to report it.
Court papers said around 12.12am on November 12, 2015, Oakes was driving a Holden Commodore in Amalfi Crescent, Nowra when he struck and injured the dog.
Documents stated Oakes had three other people in the car when they drove past an address in a northbound direction and yelled out of the vehicle something similar to “f….n dogs”.
The court heard the owner of the property went to investigate the noise, walking down the driveway, accompanied by a Staffordshire bull terrier called Molly.
The vehicle performed a U-turn and accelerated harshly towards the driveway, with the dog running past its owner and towards the car. The front right wheel struck the animal.
The vehicle was last seen driving towards St Anns Street and while the owner was not sure who was driving the car, he did recognise the vehicle.
The whole incident was captured on CCTV.
The dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic but later died.
Inquiries led police to the owner of the vehicle, who said he was not driving at the time.
Following investigation police identified Oakes as the driver, however he initially denied he was at the wheel at the time.
As well as being ordered to perform 80 hours of community service, Oakes must also undertake 40 hours of personal development education and other programs.
