Taylor O’Brien (13) and Amelia Brook (14) are gearing up to set off on a trip they will remember for the rest of their lives.
The young duo from Moss Vale Girl Guides was selected for an international jamboree in the United Kingdom and will attend a second camp and complete a community project while they are in London.
They will travel alongside Girl Guides leader Lauren Brook.
The two were selected after a rigorous application process based on experience, referee reports and interviews.
“They were the only two from the Highlands and South Coast selected,” Ms Brook said.
“It’s really opened doors and it’s just shown them they can go anywhere with guides.”
Amelia said she was proud to represent Moss Vale Girl Guides, the Highlands community and Australia on the big-ticket trip.
The trip will include community service and offers a variety of experiences and activities including water activities, archery, clay shooting, chariot racing, talent quests, bungee trampolines, caving and climbing.
"We get to learn so much that we wouldn't experience otherwise," Taylor said.
"It's really cool that my first overseas trip is going to be with Guides - unless it was with my family I don't think I'd be going overseas at this age."
For part of the trip, the girls will stay at Pax Lodge, the World Association of Girl Guides World Centre in London.
The girls opened bank accounts specifically to save for their trip, and held a raffle to help pay for their plane tickets. They will announce the raffle winner and be in touch with them this week.
They have received support and sponsorship from the community and local businesses, and welcome anyone else who’d like to help make their big trip a little easier.
"Anything that will help them with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is so appreciated," Ms Brook said.
Taylor and Amelia have another cake stall planned for Moss Vale in April, and will host a high tea before they jet off to England in July.
“If any older guides have any travel advice for the girls, please get in touch. It would be great to have some more insight,” Ms Brook said.
