Swifts captain Abbey McCulloch guided the team to a 54-44 win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday, February 25.
Strong first and third quarters were the key to the win against a strong, committed Adelaide side which tested the Swifts throughout and gave the home side a scare in the final quarter.
The game started with a physical battle. The Thunderbirds attacked the shooting circle but were stopped by the Swifts strong defence.
In the first few moments of the match, the Swifts led 2-0. Swifts Captain Abbey McCulloch, was a dynamo and got through a ton of work as her side rattled off two five-goal runs to take a commanding 16-9 lead by the first break.
With the score 27-20 at halftime the Swifts managed to keep their first quarter advantage in tact throughout the second half.
In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter the Thunderbirds worked hard get within four points of the Swifts, but a strong push-back effort from the Swifts secured them the win.
