But Chevalier College has introduced a program to help make that transition a bit easier. Developed by Beyondblue, SenseAbility will be rolled out to all Year 7 students.
Chevalier College counsellor Felicity Webster said she hoped the program would enable students to adapt to different situations not just at school but in everyday life.
“What we are also looking at is teaching them skills to help deal with problems a little bit more effectively,” she said. “The later modules will be looking at each individual’s strengths and adapting them, making the child aware of their strengths and how they can use them to adapt to their environment.”
The program will run throughout the year and students will focus on essential skills during Term 1.
Ms Webster said it was also a way to help students who might be at risk of a mental health issue.
“We’re hoping that we might be able to give them some skills to head that mental condition off at the pass or make it a less severe problem for them.
