To say she has faced adversity in her life would be an understatement yet, rising like the phoenix, Debra has taken it all in her stride.
A couple of years ago, her 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a brain malformation known as Brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM).
It required 17 hours of brain surgery, 20 days in an induced coma and 10 weeks of recovery and rehabilitation.
Despite other life hurdles Debra has faced, she completed the Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways course through TAFE NSW Illawarra at the Moss Vale campus after being handed a course information flyer.
This first career step led Debra towards further study.
She then began the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care) course.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would be so simple to step from one course into another that would send me on a path into my future workplace,” Debra said.
“It all started with a piece of paper.
“That simple good gesture has led to a much larger panoramic picture of my future, like pieces of a lifetime puzzle falling into place.”
I’ve always felt that it’s more blissful to give than to receive.

Despite ongoing care for her now 17-year-old and 11-year-old daughters, Debra’s great desire to give back to the community is admirable and humbling.
“I’ve always felt that it’s more blissful to give than to receive,” she said.
Susan Douglas, Human Services teacher, said she was inspired by Debra’s strength of character and positive outlook on life.
“Debra is going well in her course and I know she is dealing with a lot in her personal life.
She just powers through and doesn’t let her personal life impact her studies,” Susan said.
In addition to her study, Debra has completed 120 hours of work placement over the semester at Moss Vale Harbison.
“I know they are very impressed with her. Debra has a very good rapport with the elderly.”
