Facing the shops at Christmas can get you in the mood for the festive season – if you are prepared.
Highlands Marketplace centre manager Alan Olivo said the following tips could help shoppers get the most out of the silly season.
“My hope is that this list will assist our shoppers to be better prepared, giving them more time to enjoy with family and loved ones,” he said.
Top 10 tips for a stress-free Christmas shop:
- Make a list (and check it twice)
A detailed list is a must, whether you are shopping for food or gifts. Organising items on the list according to where you would find them – either by shop or sections in a store – will also help shoppers navigate more effectively
- Create a budget
Once you have created your list, set a realistic budget for each item, so you don’t add unnecessary items to your trolley
- Choose your time wisely
Allow yourself enough time to shop at a leisurely pace, tell your family you are not available on the phone, and shop earlier in the day to avoid crowds
- Leave the kids at home
This will make it easier to buy – and hide – Christmas gifts, and will also ensure you have no distractions while navigating the shiny, colourful seasonal aisles
- Do your research
Shops often have specials around Christmas, so spend some time looking at catalogues and see what specials suit you. Also listen out for spruikers (people outside shops on microphones) telling you current deals
- Presents first, food second
If you’re doing all your shopping at once, buy non-perishable items first, and then move on to the grocery shop
- Remember Number One
While shopping for friends, family and entertaining, don’t forget to spend some time getting yourself ready for Christmas by visiting the hairdresser, having your nails done, book a massage or beard trim – just be sure to make appointments soon
- Plan early for 2017
Take advantage of post-Christmas sales and buy some gifts for Christmas next year, or buy yourself something for a job well done
- Share the shopping
See if you can split the shopping with a partner, or plan a day of gift-buying with friends
- Take time to enjoy the season
Don’t forget the joy this season. Spend time with friends and family, snap a photo with Santa, and enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations in your area
