Recent ABS statistics show the number of jobs in the region has grown by 17 per cent in the last five years to August 2016, a rise of nine per cent in the past year alone.
This outstrips Greater Sydney, with nince per cent growth over the past five years and 3 per cent growth in the past year.
The Illawarra’s jobs growth is a stand out regional performer across the state, alongside the Central Coast.
The Property Council said in a statement the NSW Government should not only look to western Sydney as a “priority growth centre” but invest in infrastructure in the Illawarra which would assist in more affordable housing.
“Businesses and people have been flowing to the coastal towns an hour north and south. It is time the government followed suit and committed to investment in infrastructure which would facilitate greater growth in these regional centres.
“Given the strong job growth already being demonstrated, providing Infrastructure that delivers faster connectivity between coastal satellite cities and Sydney would provide more affordable housing and further support the economic growth across this growing network of cities.”
