“I started studying a degree in business because this is the next step in my career path” Cobus said.
“I love studying and have been studying for most of my life. Having already completed my diplomas and certificate in management, I always wanted to do a degree, but getting time off to do it was a challenge.”
Cobus previously completed some subjects at the University of Southern Africa, and received recognition for this so that the subjects counted toward his UOW degree – thereby reducing the number of subjects he needs in order to complete the course at UOW Southern Highlands.
“The UOW Southern Highlands campus is close to home and my full time employment. This cuts down on travel time and gives me access to critical resources even outside of normal hours.”
Cobus has extensive employment experience including in management roles. He worked with Joy Global for 20 years – 15 of those in management, including National Operational Excellence Manager; and now is currently working full-time as a Team Leader at Harper-Collins Distribution Centre in Moss Vale.
“I have discovered that my many years of management experience are very relevant to what I am studying at UOW. Now I am getting the formal recognition and validation of the practical skills that I have developed over the years”.
Cobus hopes to progress his career after completing his degree in Management. “Ideally I would like to get a Senior Management role in a large company or corporate business. This degree will give me a number of options currently not accessible to me” he said.
How does he manage to balance work, study and family commitments?
“Working full time, I try not to fall behind and keep up with all tutorials and lectures. Lectures can be downloaded and I can watch them before or after work. Doing three to four hours per day still gives me time to spend on weekends with my family, but it does take discipline and commitment.”
“I also would not be able to keep this up without the support from home, work and the staff at the campus. There is the incredible support from the management admin team and local tutors who helped every step of the way, from application to admission and beyond.”
