Described by president Jenette Stiles as a “jubilant occasion”, the Series 4 concert will open with Celebrations Overture by esteemed Australian composer Alfred Hill.
“Celebrations Overture was first performed in 1938 in a concert commemorating the sesquicentenary of British settlement,” she said.
“He co-founded the NSW State Conservatorium of Music and was its first Professor of Theory and Composition.”
The Series 4 program will also include the symphonic tone poem by Bedrich Smetana entitled Vltava (Die Moldau), which portrays in music the many faces of the Moldau River, upon which Prague stands.
“The jewel in the crown of this Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra performance is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 Pathetique – the most soul-searching of Tchaikovsky’s revered works,” Ms Stiles said.
“We have much to celebrate here in the Southern Highlands – not least of all our own symphony orchestra.
“Come and celebrate with us.”
The performances of the Series 4 concerts will take place on November 19 at 7.30pm and November 20 at 2.30pm.
Tickets are available from www.shso.org.au, www.trybooking.com/233163 or from The Bookshop Bowral.
The concert will be held in the Memorial Hall, Bendooley Street, Bowral.
The Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2014 and has a membership of more than 60 musicians drawn from the Highlands and surrounding areas.
It is considered to be one of the finest regional community orchestras in NSW.

Musicians of AMEB Grade 6 or higher are welcome to join the orchestra, and the community can also become involved by helping the orchestra with front-of-house, publicity and marketing, sponsorship (ongoing or one-off) and donation.
