The 2016 Southern Highlands Arts Festival is in its 11th year, and will showcase artists, poets, musicians and performers of the shire across the month of November.
Council’s cultural development officer Jenny Kena said about 60 artists from 35 studios will be featured on the Art Studio Trail, along with special exhibitions, art fairs, workshops and performances throughout the area.
“This is a way for our local artists to showcase their work, and people love it,” she said.
“The visitors love the fact they can go around on an adventure, not knowing what they will see or find at each location.”
There will be opera at the cinema, jewellery workshops, music concerts, play readings and plenty of chances to purchase a one-of-a-kind item or gift.
Ms Kena also announced a unique experience to be had in Mittagong as part of the festival.
“I would love to tell the story of every artist and event, but there is one in particular I would like to mention,” she said.
“If you wander down Ward Lane in Mittagong you will experience an outdoor gallery and poetry experience which is the first of its kind in Australia.
“The artworks respond to the environment and you can discover hidden prose under your feet.”
Bundanoon poet Lorne Johnson officially opened the event, and thanked organisers for putting on the event each year.
“Thank you for gifting us with the tremendous festival that we see before us,” he said.
“And thank you for continually recognising the value of the arts.”
