While most of us could recall the names of a few, there are actually 54,000 registered charities in Australia. The 2014 Australian Charities Report published by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission identified Australian charities had a total annual income of $103 billion.
People may feel pressured at times to show support for as many charities as possible despite often limited resources. The preferred option for many people is to offer support to just one or maybe even a few charities close to their heart, or for a cause that has impacted them.
Perhaps they are contributing to medical research, better living conditions for those struggling in society, underprivileged communities or educational programs. The focus of charities seems endless but every contribution is invaluable.
It is difficult not to wonder if the newest not-for-profit programs shine just a little brighter when it comes to securing donations and support each year -simply because they are new on the scene. But there are many charities serving the community’s needs that have been around for a long time and are equally as deserving.
One such charity is the Australian Red Cross. Established in Australia in 1914, it is one of our country’s oldest charities.
It was born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, both nationally and internationally, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. More than a century later it continues to reach out through blood donation drives and international aid; Telecross; a young parents program to support and educate vulnerable parents and their children; a Learner Driver Program, to help young and elderly people gain their driver’s licence to enable them to gain employment or look after grandchildren; and Emergency Services Work, to name a few projects.
Like all charities, the continued work of Red Cross relies on the support of others. Highlands Red Cross volunteers recently rallied support through a fundraising morning tea. Perhaps now is the time to re-familiarise ourselves with the work of this invaluable organisation. This may be a charity we can put on our list for preferred support either through donations or as a volunteer. Details: www.redcross.org.au/volunteering.
