Central to the evening was the celebration of achievements in rugby league in the 2016 competition.
Best forward, best back, players player, coaches award and the Lions award were selected from each team in the club.
The awards were first presented to the Lions under-18 side. Pat Brown was selected as best forward and Ben Powell was selected as the best back for the 2016 season. Nick Eccleston was selected as the Player’s Player.
The coaches award was given to the player that demonstrated commitment to the team and stepped up to show strong performance on the field. The 2016 recipient was Steve Jackson.
The Lions award was given to the player that acted in the best interest of the club and their team, both on and off the field. The award winner also demonstrated club spirit and pride. Jake Flood was chosen as the 2016 recipient.
Next up was the Lions reserve grade side. Best forward was awarded to Michael Hadju and best back was awarded to Hayden Wallace. Jordan Powell was selected as the Player’s Player for the season.
Nick Perrine was selected as the coaches award recipient for the 2016 season and Danny Wright was chosen as the winner of the Lions award.
Awards were then presented to the first grade team. The Mittagong Lions first grade side were the only the only team in the Group 6 competition to represent the Southern Highlands.
Best back was awarded to Regan Economos and best forward was awarded to Jye Frazer, who was also selected as the coaches award recipient. The Lions award recipient for 2016 was Tim Townsend.
Matt Thorpe was selected as the Player’s Player and was also named the 2016 club player of the year.
Thorpe also won the top honour at the Group 6 awards night recently and was named first grade player of the year.
After the Group 6 Award night, Mittagong Lions club president Dave Elliot said Thorpe was a deserving winner of the award.
“This was a massive win for Matty he has been with the club for more than 10 years and has always played above his weight,” he said.
Special awards were also given to important club members to conclude the evening.
Dimity Whiteman was selected as the ladies player of the year and Mel Perrine was selected as volunteer of the year.
Nick Eccleston was selected as under-18s player of the year. Eccleston was also selected as the under-18s player of the year at the Group 6 awards night.
