The government trialled 10 express stops at the station – five in the morning and five in the evening – but only chose to make four of them permanent.
Only one was in the evening and the Mercury reported on Friday that some Austinmer commuters would go back to driving to Thirroul to catch a train.
A TfNSW spokeswoman said more people had to use the evening trains to keep them.
“The evaluation of the Austinmer trial found that while there was an increase in patronage at Austinmer Station during the trial, customer numbers were not sufficient enough to warrant five additional express services in both the morning and afternoon peak periods,” the spokeswoman said.
She said the aim was to “find the best balance” by meeting the demands of Austinmer commuters while not increasing travel time for others.
