The impact from the rear-ending deployed an airbag and reportedly flipped the car on the notorious road in Wilton.
In a post on the Dash Cam Owners Australia page, a man identified as Darren described how an erratic driver of a silver Commodore station wagon came close to hitting his car in an apparent act of road rage.
Fearing the driver would strike again, Darren turned his dash cam around to capture what happened next.
“The car approached me a couple more times,” Darren writes.
“It was about the fourth time I looked up and saw that the car was over committed and that's when the car ran into the back of me. He did not stop.”
Graham Mercer, a witness to the frightening incident, said Darren’s car ended up on the wrong side of the road and on its side.
“Hope the driver is ok,” Mr Mercer wrote on Facebook. “Very lucky not to have a head on with the truck coming the other way.”
Witnesses who rushed to Darren’s aid were unable to recall the correct registration number, however the video has been handed over to police.
“I have clear footage of the offending vehicle on my cam which shows absolutely no provocation by any car whatsoever to enrage this driver to do what he did," Darren wrote.
Social media users reacted to the widely-shared video with a mixture of dismay and anger.
“Attempted murder,” Steve Barnes commented. “Attempted vehicular manslaughter if no obvious intention or planning, but in this case it is obvious to anyone with eyes that this guy did this very deliberately. Scum.”
“That's horrible, glad you were ok,” another wrote. “Wtf is wrong with some people? Could have been a baby or small child in the back of that car.”

I was rammed by a silver Commodore station wagon for no apparent reason on Picton Rd Wilton.
Witnesses say the driver was driving pretty radically in front of them. An overtaking lane opened up and all the vehicles behind me jumped into the right lane. I then followed them to overtake a slow driving car and truck.
The slow driving car was the silver Commodore. I was the last car to go past. I didn't know anything about the car and what he had done. When the road went back to single lane I was the last car.
About five minutes up the road I saw the silver Commodore flying up my rear. The car almost hit me. I turned my dash cam around as I feared The driver was going to do it again. The car approached me a couple more times. It was about the fourth time I looked up and saw that the car was over committed and that's when the car ran into the back of me. He did not stop. Witnesses thought they got the registration number however a couple of digits were wrong.
I have uploaded the video to the police event and I'm waiting for the officer in charge to come back on duty. I have clear footage of the offending vehicle on my cam which shows absolutely no provocation by any car whatsoever to enrage this driver to do what he did."
