The NSW Electoral Commission has moved to clear up any voting confusion, reminding Illawarra electors that not all councils have elections on September 10.

Due to the council amalgamation process, only 81 councils across the state will be electing new councillors. Merging councils – as well as those like Wollongong and Shellharbour where a merger is pending – have had their elections deferred until 2017.
Voting is compulsory for all people enrolled in areas where elections are being held – like Kiama – and fines apply for not voting.
Electoral commissioner John Schmidt advised residents to check if they need to vote.
“This situation has the potential to cause confusion among some electors, particularly those who live, or are enrolled, in areas not conducting elections, bordering councils that are,” he said.
