Thinking of You: Life and Love According to Ann Carr-Boyd is a performance focused on the intimate and philosophical side of composer Ann Carr-Boyd’s thinking and process.
Performed by Thoroughbass – Diana Weston (harpsichord), Danielle Grant (soprano), Steve Machamber (vibraphone) and John D’Arcy (electronic organ) - the music can be enjoyed with Highlands food and wine.
Ms Weston said Ann Carr-Boyd was one of the Highlands “most valued residents” and recalled when she first met the composer.
“She was a ‘hands on’ musician who loved to get into the thick of things,” she said.
“What had struck me was that Ann seemed a natural with harpsichord style, a very unusual quality because harpsichords are instruments from a different era.”
Due to Ann’s expertise with the harpsichord, she was able to contribute to the repertoire of Australia’s oldest professional performing arts organisation, Musica Viva.
Ms Weston said Ann also contributed to the popularity of the organisation and the instrument.
“The result is a large body of work in which the harpsichord, with various and unusual combinations of instruments (violin, percussion, voice, electric organ, guitar), is central,” she said.
“It’s this material that Thoroughbass has recorded as the Flying West Collection amounting to more than 120 minutes of listening time.”
Chamberworks representative Stephen Bydder said while the full repertoire will not be performed, the afternoon show will be full of songs which Ann wrote in the 1970s.
“[These songs are influenced by] the world of insects to thoughts on the power of love, to the challenges of motherhood,” he said.
“At the same time she embraces the cosmological, the baroque, the profound and the silly.”
The show will take place at 4.00pm on September 24 in the Rose Room at 51F Sunninghill Avenue, Burradoo.
Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for concession, and includes supper.
