Analysis by the motoring organisation found that, when it came to regular unleaded fuel, the station on the corner of Gipps Road and Foley Street was the cheapest in the city in 2016.
The station’s average price was 111.9 cents.
Rounding out the top three were the Caltex/Woolworths on the Princes Highway at Fairy Meadow and the 7-Eleven at Peterborough Avenue, Lake Illawarra, both averaging 112.3 cents.
The data for the top 10 rankings has come from the state government’s fuel reforms, which require more than 2000 service stations to register and update their prices online.
That data is available via the government’s Fuel Check website, and is also powering the NRMA’s new phone app that lets people find the cheapest petrol closest to their location.
“Legislation has been passed that requires fuel service station operators to report their prices in real time,” said NRMA Illawarra director Marisa Mastroianni.
“That wasn’t available before. So on the basis of that occurring, we’ve been able to develop the app, and we’re actually working together with the government and their Fuel Check website.”
Now everyone’s going to know who’s got the cheaper prices.

The NRMA app is made up of a map that shows the location of every service station in the state.
Tapping on one of the stations allows you to scroll through the prices of all the types of petrol for sale.
It also offers a link to report an incorrect price, which could lead to the station being fined for not updating their prices.
The amount people saved on petrol could add up over a year, Ms Mastroianni said.
She said a driver of a standard V6 Holden Commodore sedan who travelled 15,000km a year could save more than $500 a year by filling up at the cheapest service station.
“The real benefit is putting the power back into the hands of the people, letting them know that you’re going to get cheaper prices,” Ms Mastroianni said.
“And it will take competition to a whole new level. Now everyone’s going to know who’s got the cheaper prices.”
The app is only available for iPhone at the moment, but an Android version is being developed.
