Residents and protest groups have lined the Hume Highway today as part of Lock The Gate's 'Water For Life' campaign.
The initiative is not restricted to the Southern Highlands - people are lining the Hume Highway from Melbourne to Canberra, Sydney and even throughout Tasmania.
Members from Battle for Berrima and Coal Free Southern Highlands are waving signs at the Mackay VC rest stop, while residents also set up camp at the Kingsbury VC rest stop on the highway.
Battle for Berrima member Virginia Ellsmore said it was no coincidence the campaign was being held a week before the election.
"With the election coming up, we need to let politicians know that even if they don't care about the environment, we do," she said.
"It's the young people who will suffer, so let's stick together and save the planet."
Ms Ellsmore said they would be waving signs until 2.00pm.
"We've been getting a few toots, especially from truck drivers, it's good fun," she said.
"It's amazing how this type of thing can bring people together."
Further down the highway, past Sutton Forest, Simona Angeli was standing with people who had joined the Hume Highway Action Group Southern Highlands Facebook group.
She said today was about getting together and keeping water clean for the future.
"I'm just a human being that wants to keep clean water in Australia," she said.
"We've made signs for ourselves - mine says 'Water is a human right'.
"People all over Australia are joining in, and you can also use today to highlight local issues."
The groups will be along the Hume Highway until 2.00pm today.
