Police say two men threw the 46-year-old victim to the ground and repeatedly kicked him in the head about 11am Friday, after a verbal altercation turned physical.
The man suffered injuries including a fractured eye socket. NSW Ambulance paramedics came to his aid; he later underwent surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick.
The matter was reported to Wollongong Police Tuesday night. A 21-year-old man was arrested a short time later after officers saw him driving on Corrimal Street.
The man was arrested and charged with assault with reckless grievous bodily harm in company.
He appeared before Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.
Investigations are continuing.
