News reports surfaced this morning about possible plans to locate a major prison within the Wollondilly region, following the eventual sale and closure of Sydney's Long Bay Jail.

Corrective Services Minister David Elliot was reported to be considering three possible sites within the Wollondilly Shire for the construction of a “mega-jail” - the size of which is not yet known.

Mayor of Wollondilly, Councillor Simon Landow said the council was "extremely concerned" not to have been consulted about the plans.

"We always go to great efforts to consult with our community about major proposals. We have sought an urgent meeting with the Minister to discuss this matter," he said.

General Manager Luke Johnson said prior to today's reports, council had been unaware "of any such proposal."

"This is particularly disappointing as we have been working closely with the State Government on plans for a major new town and land release areas within our Shire," he said.

“A prison of this size within Wollondilly would represent a major change in direction for our Shire and our community, and there has been no dialogue or consultation”, Mr Johnson said.

In a media release, Wollondilly Shire Council stated it expected the State Government to be "fully consultative and open about the proposals and to carry out genuine consultation" with council and the community of the Wollondilly region.
