While some may argue that 'Hallmark holidays' and consumerism dominate our modern world, the sentiment at the heart of a special day just for mum is what it's all about.
Where would we be without the reassurance, sage advice, disapproving stares and encouraging support of mothers the world over?
Mothers, grandmothers, aunties and special women throughout our community will no doubt be treated to breakfasts in bed, special dinners, relaxation and gifts as acknowledgement for the efforts and nurturing they show us on a regular basis.
Clearly the loving gestures will most definitely be deserved on Mother's Day.
This brings me to a little anecdote.
I was once talking with a university friend on her birthday.
I asked if she had any special birthday plans.
"Yes, a family dinner, but first I have to get some flowers for my mum on the way home," she replied.
I was puzzled.
"Is it her birthday too?" I asked.
"No. We always buy flowers for mum on our birthdays - to say 'thank you' for having us," she told me.
More than six years on, I still remember that exact conversation because in its simplest form it was a beautiful gesture of selfless generosity.
So while this weekend is a great time to put in extra effort for the ladies who mean the most to you - every day is the perfect opportunity to show gratitude.
