It's particularly noticeable since the rise of social media. Hidden behind keyboards, anonymous behind smart phones, it appears people don't think twice about throwing a spiteful comment towards someone else.
It's a habit that's begun to leach into our day to day interactions.
These days, we are quick to criticise, and slow to compliment.
There is no doubt that pointing out an error or constructive criticism about how something could be improved is invaluable. After all, there is always room for improvement.
However, the bottom line is that nothing and no-one is perfect, and it is time we showed a little more consideration and compassion for others.
People who may not have the biggest smile when they serve you at the counter of a retail store may well be struggling with a personal matter.
When was the last time you thanked someone in a customer service role, and smiled back at them?
The online world is full of trolls - those who get a kick out of snarky and nasty comments designed to elicit a reaction.
The less of this behaviour we force upon each other in the real world, the better off we will be.
Quite simply, aggressive attacks or demeaning put-downs are more a reflection on yourself than on the person you are targeting.
Have a think about what reaction you might get before you hit enter on that comment, or open your mouth to pass commentary.
