While the high heat on the day was out of the ordinary for this time of year, it was a reminder of the extreme type of weather that our shire is capable of.
Although we're still a few days out from the official start of summer, it's important to remember we are already well into our peak bush fire danger period.
Authorities have extra reason for concern this year too.
Forecasters suggest the current El Nino weather pattern is likely to continue for the foreseeable future bringing with it drier conditions and an increased probability of widespread drought.
Compounding the problem is the high rainfall we experienced early in the year which has led to an increase in grass and ground vegetation growth.
All these elements combined have the potential to create the 'perfect storm' conditions for a bush fire this year.
However there are things we can all do to decrease our risk and exposure to bush fire.
It's vitally important that all residents prepare a bush fire survival plan and prepare their families and homes prior to the holiday season.
To view how you can prepare a Bush Fire Survival Plan visit www.myfireplan.com.au. In just a few minutes the site explains how to better prepare and protect your home and loved ones in the event of a bush fire.
Some simple steps to help safeguard your home this summer include cleaning your gutters of leaves and twigs, repairing damaged or missing tiles on roofs, keeping lawns short and well maintained and cutting back trees and shrubs that hang over buildings.
To learn more about other potentially lifesaving tips visit the NSW Rural Fire Service webpage at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
Have a great summer but please remain vigilant, prepared and above all stay safe.
In less than a fortnight council will be extending the hours of operation at the Resource Recovery Centre (RRC). As of Monday, December 7 gates will open from 7.30am until 4.30pm seven days a week.
The longer hours are the result of a survey undertaken on site in which customers told us they'd prefer to see the facility open later in the afternoon. We're sure these longer hours will be warmly welcomed by everyone from tradies through to mums and dads looking at dropping off their waste following a weekend clean-up.
Remember too that the RRC will be open right across the Christmas break to accept all of your extra holiday waste - closing only for the public holidays.
For more information on the new hours or services available visit www.wsc.nsw.gov.au, call 4868 0888 or visit the centre onsite at 177 Berrima Road, Moss Vale.
