The answer for most of us is very little, but our community has Berrima District Museum that can solve that problem easily with a visit to it.
Jane and Tony McCormick made that visit recently and could not have been more impressed with the Museum.
Tony's immediate comment was "It is the best small museum I have ever visited in the world".
Jane "had her socks blown off".
Their professional lives had often seen them developing core landscape designs for cultural precincts in Australia and other countries. They have an understanding of the importance of any museum to a community's identity.
This is a place where you can find local history stories that are important and relevant to the community presented clearly with a wonderful eye for detail.
Do you know the story of the "Prisoners of Arcady" or who were the 1200 men and women from the Southern Highlands who represented us during World War I? The answer to these questions can be found at the museum and a lot more.
Berrima is one of only a few historic towns in New South Wales and if you have ever wondered its significance in our history you should visit the Berrima Museum and find out.
Once you decide to make that visit, leave yourself some time to also do the German Internment Walk Berrima.
As Tony and Jane found, this only added to their experience and gave them an added depth and understanding to the historical significance of the "Prisoners of Arcady".
All of this is provided by a team of volunteers that work for the Museum that is "the best in the world".
Come and judge for yourself. The Story Centre at the Berrima District Museum is open 10am-4pm Wed to Sun and everyday of the public school holidays
