The murderous pair were imprisoned in Berrima Gaol, tried and subsequently hanged there in 1843. The murder, trial and execution were extensively covered, particularly in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Keith Brown has sorted fact from fiction and even fabrication, and produced The Day Dunkley Died, a book that documents accurately for the first time the events surrounding the story.
He will talk about his book at the Berrima District Historical Society's general meeting on Thursday August 27 at 2:00pm.
Keith was born in Bendigo in 1927, graduated from the University of Melbourne and joined the Dept of External Affairs, serving in Melbourne, Canberra, Geneva, Singapore, San Francisco, Washington DC and Tokyo. He retired in 1987 and has been a resident in Gunning since 2008 where, as Research Officer for the local Historical Society, he became involved in the town's early history when the ABC planned a segment for their series "Who's been sleeping in my house?"
In his talk, Keith will stress the importance of accurately recording family history as this often provides guidance to more general events.
All are welcome to attend, upstairs in the Old Council Chambers, Bowral Road, Mittagong, afternoon tea provided.
