Similar services have been set up elsewhere on the South Coast as Foundation spokesman Ross Williams explains.
“Ricky’s Place in Bega is in its sixth year, there is Monty’s Place in Narooma and the just-opened Pearl’s Place in Merimbula,” he said.
Mr Williams said that research had revealed the need for such a service in the Eurobodalla, and that it could lead to important connections with other services.
“There is strong evidence that within the shire there are many disadvantaged folk who would benefit from such a volunteer run service,” he said.
“We hope to extend our capacity to offer referral, if required, to professional bodies
and agencies operating locally.”
Mr Williams insists that it is not the foundation’s intention to move in on anyone’s territory.
“It is not intended to replace but support existing services,” he said.
“Our philosophy is one of collaboration and co-creation.”
The meeting to discuss the establishment of such a service in the Eurobodalla will be held at St John’s Anglican Church Hall corner of Page and Campbell Streets in Moruya on Wednesday August 19 at 5.30pm.
“We invite you to attend a public interest meeting sponsored by the Foundation and organised by a planning committee of local people with in principal support from Eurobodalla Shire Council,” Mr Williams said.
“The meeting will include speakers with first-hand experience in accessing food and setting up and running a social café.”
