These are the wise words from National League for Democracy chairperson and winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The word democracy combines two shorter Greek words, 'demos' which means whole citizen living within a particular city-state, and 'kratos' which means power or rule.
Democracy is people. It is reason and progress. It is a consensual society. It is shared power.
Doesn't it make sense then, to allow the people to vote for the person that will lead their community?
The idea of a mayor, elected by councillors, reflects an archaic system. It strips the community of their right to choose and to be a part of a legitimate government.
The Highlands community should have the right to choose the person that will make decisions that will affect them the most.
They should have the right to choose someone they believe can carry out the job with the community's best interests in mind.
The uncertainty of life dwells on everyone, but the one part of life we can control is the vote we make to choose our leaders, at a state and national level.
It shouldn't be any different at a local level. We, the people of the Highlands, have the right to have a say in the destiny of this shire and the person that will duly carry out this destiny.
