It was turned at the Mittagong based PCYC by PCYC CEO Darren Black, Councillor Larry Whipper, Wollondilly Council’s Tina Hardy, Mayor Duncan Gair and local MP Jai Rowell.
PCYC Working Group chair Cr Whipper said this event was about 20 years in the making and was a result of a collaborative effort between both councils and police.
“We recognised that there was a need for this for the young people in the area,” Cr Whipper said.
“If it hadn’t been for the ambition of Inspector Anthony McLean we wouldn’t be here today.”
Mr Black said he wanted to make sure the Southern Highlands had a PCYC up and running by 2015 and without Cr Whipper’s perseverance the project wouldn’t be where it was today.
However, NSW Police Force superintendent and commander of youth command David Scrimgeour said this was only halfway for the project.
“We can’t just have an empty hall, it is critically important this ongoing commitment remains,”
“We will have two police officers working here as case managers for young offenders and group programs will be held here as well.
“I want to see this club grow.”
