The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) announced 6000 'double defaulter' charities that were at risk of losing registration and access to Commonwealth charity tax concessions because they failed to meet the reporting requirements for two consecutive years.
Of the 18 local charities that have been classed as a 'double defaulter', at least nine are inactive, unable to be contacted or appear to have closed.
However, representatives from active charities, including four school parents and citizens associations, have until mid May to submit their Annual Information Statement to the ACNC for the 2013 and 2014 years.
ACNC commissioner Susan Pascoe AM said registered charities that had not lodged their Annual Information Statements for two consecutive years would have their charity status revoked.
"We have made numerous attempts to contact these charities and have sent them multiple reminders over the past two years," she said.
"The ACNC is here to help charities meet their obligations and any charities that still require assistance should contact us."
Charities can submit their 2013 and 2014 Annual Information Statement by logging into the Charity Portal at http://charity.acnc.gov.au
For help and support, charities can contact the ACNC on 13 22 62 or email advice@acnc.gov.au
